Buddhist faith is based on four noble truths:
- Life is suffering
- Desire is the reason for suffering
- Overcoming desire will end suffering
- Finding the path to deliverance will end suffering
The faith delineates an eighfold path:

- Right speech
- Right action
- Right occupation
- Right effort
- Right self-mastery
- Right meditation
Buddha organized a society of monks and ordained them,
as he lay dying (c. 486 B.C.): "work out your own salvation
with diligence".
